POG April Honorees

In the Spring of 2019, the London City School District published its Portrait of a Graduate, which highlights the key skills and attitudes necessary for district graduates to have success in college and careers. Our district uses the Portrait of a Graduate to help design meaningful teaching and learning experiences for our students.

The following students were recognized during the April Regular Board of Education meeting for substantially demonstrating the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. Congratulations to each of these students!

Bryston Toronto  (8th) - London Middle School

I want to recognize LMS student, Bryston Toronto, who exemplifies the district's goal of having future-ready students.

Bryston's exceptional performance during the 2023-2024 middle school wrestling season truly stands out. His remarkable regular and postseason record of 34-5, along with securing multiple 1st place finishes, notably at the Central Buckeye Conference Tournament and OHWAY Regional Championships, reflects his dedication and skill in the sport. His commendable 3rd-place finish at the OHWAY State Championships is a testament to his perseverance and talent on the mat.

Moreover, Bryston's involvement in wrestling goes beyond the middle school season. His participation in CP wrestling at St. Francis DeSales High School under the guidance of Collin Palmer, a 7-time state champion for Ohio, demonstrates his drive for continuous improvement and pursuit of excellence. Training for prestigious national tournaments like the "Tournament of Champions" underscores his ambition and determination to excel in his sport.

Additionally, Bryston's success in football as a starting fullback and linebacker for London Middle School further showcases his versatility and skill in athletics. His team's impressive undefeated record and dominance on the field reflect his commitment, teamwork, and leadership qualities.

Bryston's achievements extend beyond athletics. Academically, he has consistently held Merit honor roll distinction since 6th grade, highlighting his commitment to excellence in his studies. His membership in the prestigious National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) further demonstrates his academic excellence and dedication to service.

Bryston's involvement in community service showcases his commitment to making a positive impact beyond the classroom and wrestling mat. Spending considerable time at the funeral home and Courthouse, organizing files, assisting with tasks, and contributing to the upkeep of these spaces, reflects his strong work ethic and willingness to serve his community.

Bryston Toronto exemplifies the competencies of future-ready students in numerous ways. Bryston's dedication, integrity, and accomplishments make him a true asset to our school community and a role model for future generations.

Luke Marriott (12th) - London High School

Luke Marriott, a senior at London High School, is this month's Portrait of a Graduate. Luke is known for his outstanding character, academic prowess, and remarkable contributions to both the arts and athletics within our school community.

Academically, Luke consistently demonstrates a thirst for knowledge and a genuine passion for learning. His commitment to excellence is evident in his impressive academic record, marked by consistently high grades and a rigorous course load. Luke approaches each challenge with determination and a positive attitude, setting a commendable example for his peers.

In the realm of the arts, Luke shines brightly as a talented and creative individual. His artistic endeavors, whether through visual arts or other mediums, exhibit a remarkable depth of expression and originality. Luke's creative flair not only enriches our school's artistic landscape but also serves as an inspiration to his fellow students.

Stacey Billiter, Luke's art teacher, shares Luke aka my ceramic right-hand man. Not only has Luke garnered skills to produce contest-worthy ceramic work, but he has helped countless others experience the workings of the pottery wheels. He has shown kindness, dedication, and leadership in his almost daily teachings of wheel techniques. He loves the wheel and has for two years now, dedicated almost a period a day to teaching other students how to use the wheel and takes great delight as his students learn and succeed. He has been invaluable to and for me. To say I'm going to miss him next year is an understatement.

His athletic skills and success speaks for itself. His intelligence and GPA tell another successful story. For me, his path has been one full of laughter, growth, dedication,  persistence,  knowledge, success, and kindness.  All of this combines to create a young man who exhibits exactly what we want for our graduates and the world.

Furthermore, Luke's contributions to our school's soccer team as a goalkeeper have been nothing short of exemplary. His dedication, discipline, and outstanding sportsmanship have earned him the respect and admiration of teammates, coaches, and competitors alike. Luke's leadership on the field reflects his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Beyond his academic and extracurricular achievements, Luke is a person of exceptional character. He consistently demonstrates integrity, empathy, and a willingness to go above and beyond to help others. Luke's positive influence extends beyond the classroom and playing field, enriching our school community and fostering a culture of kindness and inclusivity.

In conclusion, Luke Marriott embodies the qualities of an exemplary student. His academic achievements, artistic talents, and athletic prowess are matched only by his outstanding character and unwavering dedication to excellence.
