LHS Senior Skylar Mason recently was awarded a $200 scholarship from the West Jefferson VFW Post after winning the local Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest. Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy essay program provides high school students the opportunity to express themselves through a democratic or patriotic-themed audio essay. This year’s prompt was, “Why is The Veteran important to me?” Contestants were asked to submit a 3-5 minute audio essay and were judged on originality, content, and delivery. By winning the local contest, Skylar’s submission will be entered into the national competition where the grand prize is worth $35,000. Congratulations Skylar!
