Paxton On Field Announcer

Students and staff from London City Schools were recently featured at Scotts Miracle-Gro Field during the Columbus Crew’s match against Nashville SC as part of the club’s “Stay in the Game! Attendance Network Night,” an initiative recognizing school districts committed to improving student attendance.

The event celebrated the connection between showing up for school and showing up for your team, with districts from across the region highlighted for their efforts. In the days leading up to the match, London Elementary students joined peers from 16 districts to help paint a massive Tifo, a large banner displayed in the supporters’ section, organized by the Crew’s supporters group, the Nordecke. When unveiled, the artwork marked a historic moment as the first Major League Soccer Tifo fully painted by students. Several London students also attended the match as a reward for strong or improved attendance, reinforcing the importance of being present and engaged in school each day.

London was further represented on the field during the match, as London Middle School student Paxton McKenzie served as the on-field announcer, energizing the crowd in front of thousands of fans. Watch Paxton’s on-field moment here.

Another highlight of the evening came when London Elementary fifth-grade teacher Joe Johnson was honored as the game’s Hometown Hero. A London High School graduate, Johnson has dedicated 31 years to serving students and families in the district as both a teacher and coach. A strong advocate for student attendance, he understands its impact on academic success and long-term growth. Watch Mr. Johnson’s Hometown Hero recognition here.

Through partnerships with the Columbus Crew and the Stay in the Game! Attendance Network, London City Schools continues to promote the importance of attendance while celebrating the students and staff who make showing up every day a priority.
