Medical Detectives Camp Participant

During London Middle School’s Summer Camp, students took on exciting roles as detectives, scientists, and CDC agents in a week packed with hands-on exploration. Campers began by learning how to read vital signs and recognize normal values, then used that knowledge to analyze health data and design their own experiments. They dove into the world of forensic science, studying fingerprinting and learning how loops, whorls, and arches can help identify both victims and suspects. With this knowledge, students became sleuths, piecing together clues to solve a mock criminal investigation. They also explored the qualities of a reliable eyewitness and the role of forensic artistry in suspect identification, even testing their own skills by acting as both witnesses and sketch artists.

In addition to their detective work, students explored the human nervous system by building neuron models and learning about their essential functions in the body. The week wrapped up with an engaging epidemiology simulation where campers became CDC agents tasked with finding the source of a zombie virus outbreak. They examined fictional patient files, traced the spread of the illness, and tested substances to uncover what was making their “patients” sick. Through these creative, hands-on activities, students not only gained valuable scientific knowledge but also developed critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills in a fun and memorable way.
