The 5th graders from London Elementary School recently took an exciting trip to Ohio Caverns, often called “America’s Most Colorful Caverns.” Known as Ohio’s largest cave system, with about a mile of passageways reaching depths up to 103 feet, the caverns amazed students with shimmering white, orange, brown, and rare blue mineral formations. As they explored underground, they saw incredible sights like the Crystal King — the largest stalactite in the caverns — and rooms where the rocks twisted into shapes that sparked their imaginations.
Along the way, students learned how caves form over thousands of years as water slowly carves through limestone, leaving behind beautiful mineral deposits. They discovered the difference between stalactites and stalagmites, understood how underground water shapes the landscape, and learned why protecting these delicate spaces matters. By the end of the tour, they came away with not just awe and excitement but also a deeper understanding of Ohio’s natural history, geology, and the hidden world beneath their feet.
