London Schools Foundation

The London Schools Foundation was founded in 1982 as a charitable organization independent of the district but designed to support London City School District students. The Foundation meets annually to authorize monies for scholarships as described below for LHS graduates. Scholarship applications are available beginning in March of each year in the school counseling office.

Jim and Kathy Hackett Scholarship

London Schools Foundation

The Jim and Kathy Hackett Scholarship was established in 2017 through a generous donation by Jim and Kathy Hackett, both 1973 graduates of London High School. An extremely successful and visionary leader, Mr. Hackett’s distinguished career includes leadership roles in some of the world’s foremost organizations including Steelcase, Ford, and the University of Michigan. The scholarship named in honor of him and his wife is intended to support female, minority students, who need extra support to reach their dreams.

Eligibility: Female, minority graduating seniors. Students should demonstrate in their essays, how with additional support, they can be successful in furthering their education and in life. Essays should include any specifics, if known, on post-secondary educational choice and choice of major. 

Award: The scholarship is intended to cover the cost of the first year of attendance for one scholarship winner. Students must be enrolled in a post-secondary educational option by December 31st of the year in which they graduated and the scholarship is awarded.

Edward J. Harper/Dr. & Mrs. Ray Laybourne Scholarship

London Schools Foundation

Edward J. Harper was a local farmer who left a major portion of his estate to help London High School students pursue higher education. Mr. Harper was a quiet man who had a passion for London High School sports and attended many sporting events. He was also a contributor to the London FFA to help further local farm students.

The London High School Academic Achievement Council was formed to promote student success and academic achievement. Scholarships will be awarded annually, by this organization, on the basis of achievement.

Eligibility: Any graduating senior who has been enrolled at LHS for a minimum of five semesters. Applicants must be planning to pursue education after high school at a junior college, community college, university, technical school, or other accredited institution.

Award: The total amount of this scholarship is determined annually by the London City Schools Foundation Board. The scholarship committee may choose to divide the total scholarship and award several smaller scholarships based on the merit of the applicants.

Martha Geib Memorial Scholarship

London High School Academic Achievement Boosters

Dr. Martha Geib was the London High School Class of 1983 Valedictorian. She was a 1987 graduate of Muskingum College and a 1991 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Geib practiced pediatric medicine in London from 1999 until her passing in 2015. She served on the London City Schools Board of Education from 2010 to 2015 (President 2012), and she was President of the London Academic Achievement Boosters from 2011 to 2014. She served the children of Madison county by serving on the Presbyterian Child Care Center Advisory Board, the WIC Advisory Board, the Madison County Health Partners Board, and the Madison County Health Consortium. Dr. Geibwas inducted into the London High School Athletic Hall of Fame on October 17, 2003. She earned 10 varsity letters at London High School and she lettered in volleyball at Muskingum College until a career-ending knee injury in 1986. Dr. Geib was posthumously inducted into the London High School Academic Hall of Fame on October 16, 2015.

Eligibility: Any graduating student who is eligible for and applies for the Edward J. Harper/Dr. & Mrs. Ray Laybourne Scholarship is eligible for the Martha Geib Memorial Scholarship.

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award presented to one student. The amount of the scholarship is determined annually based on fund availability, but the amount will not be less than $500.

Coach Jim Bowlus Scholarship

Coach Bowlus was the head football coach at London High School for 26 years. He compiled a record of 161-66-6.  His career included two undefeated seasons and eight league championships. The coach was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1978. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1937, in Business Administration, and lettered on the varsity baseball team. In 1948 he returned to Ohio State to complete his Master's Degree in Business. He was also involved in many civic organizations.

Eligibility: Any graduating senior and sports participant from London High School, who is planning to attend a two or four-year post-secondary institution and has strong potential as a college walk-on athlete. Applicants must have achieved a cumulative 2.5 GPA and submit an additional essay.

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award of $500 presented to one student.

Omer Dwyer Memorial Scholarship

Omer and Margaret S. Dwyer were long and loyal residents and supporters of the London community and the London City School system. In memory of her husband, Omer Dwyer, Margaret Dwyer would like to offer a scholarship to a graduating senior athlete who is planning on pursuing his/her education after high school.

Eligibility: Any graduating senior athlete. Students who have chosen to graduate early, ahead of their class will not be eligible according to the early graduation contract. Applicants must be planning to pursue education after high school at a 4-year college university program. The application must include an additional letter of recommendation from a coach.

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award of $500 presented to one student.

Alice Louise Ridenour Wood Scholarship

London Schools Foundation

Alice Louise Ridenour was a dedicated teacher in the London City Schools and a valued member of the London community.  It was her wish that a scholarship fund is established, at the time of her death, to assist graduating London High School seniors planning to pursue course work beyond high school. It is in her memory that these scholarships are awarded.  Scholarships will be awarded annually on the basis of merit and evidence of financial need.

Eligibility: Any graduating senior who has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher after seven semesters. This includes all members of the class who are eligible including those who attend Tolles. Students who have chosen to graduate early are not eligible. Applicants must be planning to pursue education after high school at a two-year, four-year, or technical college/university. Applicants must submit a required additional essay.

Award: This award is substantial but changes yearly based on the performance of the scholarship trust. 

The Richard Hegler Thomas Scholarship 

Private Gift

This scholarship is to be used to aid a needy and deserving graduating senior of London High School in paying his/her tuition in a college of his/her choice.  

Eligibility: Any graduating senior from London High School with demonstrated financial need. Applicants must be planning to pursue education after high school at a two-year, four-year, or technical college/university.

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award of $750 presented to one student.

The Geer Scholarship

The Geer Scholarship was established through a gift by Jim and Vici Geer in memory of Charles and Chester Geer.  The recipient must possess the following qualities: need, ambition, integrity, and goal orientation.

Eligibility: Any graduating senior from London High School. Applicants must be planning to pursue education after high school at a two-year, four-year, or technical college/university.

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award of $500 presented to one student.

Erik and Kelly Snyder Memorial Scholarship

London Schools Foundation

The Snyder family has chosen to honor the memory of Erik and Kelly Snyder with a yearly scholarship supported by a memorial golf outing. Kelly Snyder was a 1986 LHS graduate, while Erik was a 2017 grad. Because of Erik’s love of golf and intent to graduate from Trine University with his Golf Management Degree, the Synder Family has chosen to designate this scholarship to graduating seniors who participated as members of the LHS golf team. 

Eligibility: Graduating senior(s) from London High School who participated as members of the LHS Golf Team. Applicants must submit an essay explaining their future career plans and how the scholarship will be used in college to achieve those goals. 

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 presented to one male and one female student.

Wall Family Scholarship

London Schools Foundation

The Wall Family Scholarship is dedicated in memory of Justin Wall, a 1999 London High School graduate. Justin was kind, an animal lover, and an excellent athlete. During his time at London High School, he played baseball, basketball, golf, track, and wrestled. After his high school graduation, he went on to receive an Audio Engineering degree from Full Sail University in Florida). Later, he began a successful lawn care business.

Eligibility: This scholarship is intended for a graduating senior with financial need, who gives back to the community, and is planning on attending a 4-year or 2-year institution or going to a trade school.

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 presented to one student.
