VFW Competition

The Patriots Pen Essay Writing Competition is sponsored by the local VFW and intended to help students take a closer look at American history. Students participate by writing a 300-400 world essay on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. The theme for 22-23 was, "My Pledge to Our Veterans."

Twenty-one LMS students from Mrs. Hunter's ELA classes chose to participate in the contest this year. Three London students took home honors and were recognized by the West Jefferson Post Commander, Ted Karnes.

1st Place: Lyllian Ball ($100 prize scholarship)

2nd Place: Kaitlyn Cooper ($75 prize scholarship)

3rd Place: Eva Dwyer ($25 prize scholarship)

The contest consists of four levels. The first level is sponsored by local VFW Posts. Post winners then advance to the VFW District level. Winners then advance to a state competition with the top essayist advancing to a national competition. Lyllian will move on to the VFW district level.
