The London City School District Board of Education met this morning to discuss the district’s educational learning options for both the immediate and long terms. The Board supported a recommendation from the superintendent to complete the remaining two weeks of the semester in its current virtual format with a commitment to begin the new year in a hybrid model.

Beginning on Monday, November 30th, 2020, all Madison County schools were required to begin virtual learning due to an order by Madison County Public Health. The Health Board rescinded those orders on Wednesday, December 2nd and instead issued advisories that schools should remain closed until the new year. The recommendation for the district to continue in a virtual format takes into account the health department’s recommendation, but also the fact that 15 district staff members currently either tested positive or were quarantined or isolated due to close contact of a person with COVID19. The number of missing staff members in addition to a desire to maintain a consistent educational model for district families contributed to the recommendation.

Based on the ongoing success of district athletic programs in maintaining the health and safety of athletes and given the fact these programs are not encountering the same staffing issues, the district will restart athletics beginning Monday, December 7th.
