LHS' Jason Argonauts

Student Ryan Bower and teacher Eli Detemple recently participated in the JASON Argonaut Expedition, an immersive field research experience led by JASON Learning and The Bug Chicks. The expedition took place in the Pacific Northwest, with Portland, Oregon, serving as the home base for exploration.

Portland’s location, surrounded by mountain ranges, the Pacific Ocean, deserts, and volcanoes, offered a unique environment for hands-on learning. Throughout the adventure, the Argonauts explored how artificial intelligence and other technological innovations are transforming the field of conservation.

As part of their research, Argonauts used trail cameras and field audio recorders to monitor local wildlife, gaining firsthand experience with real-world conservation tools and techniques. They also went whale watching, observing marine life in its natural habitat and deepening their understanding of ecosystem interactions and biodiversity.

In addition to these rich field experiences, participants engaged in design thinking, scientific research, and place-based problem solving. Their work focused on the Columbia River Gorge, where they studied how the region’s complex landscape influences the way organisms live, adapt, and thrive.

The expedition culminated in a formal presentation of their findings and proposed solutions to representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This opportunity allowed students and educators to share their insights with professionals who play a direct role in managing and preserving natural environments, reinforcing the real-world impact of their work.

The experience was filled with discovery, innovation, and adventure—an unforgettable opportunity for Ryan and Eli to grow as learners and leaders in science and environmental stewardship.
