Melissa Gaston

In the Spring of 2019, the London City School District published its Portrait of a Graduate, which highlights the key skills and attitudes necessary for district graduates to have success in college and careers. Our district uses the Portrait of a Graduate to help design meaningful teaching and learning experiences for our students. In a similar way during the Spring of 2022, the London City School District worked to identify and publish the most valued skills and dispositions that educators should demonstrate on a daily basis to help prepare our students to be future-ready. These skills include:

  • Effective Communication,

  • Focused on Relationship-Building,

  • Being Flexible and Adaptable,

  • Demonstrating High Integrity; and,

  • Being a Role-Model for Life-Long Learning.

Melissa Gaston was recognized during the December Regular Board of Education meeting for substantially demonstrating the district’s Portrait of an Educator. Congratulations Mrs. Gaston!

Nominated by a Parent:

Mrs. Gaston is so wonderful with all of the children that I have seen being dropped off at school. She is a wonderful person who deserves a lot! She has helped my daughter so much with her reading it amazes me how far my daughter has come along with her reading. My daughter along with my husband, our youngest daughter, and myself think so highly of Mrs. Gaston. She truly is a special person!

Nominated by Mrs. Mills:

When I think about want I want my educators to look like, Melissa Gaston exemplifies many of those traits. Melissa is one of our amazing reading specialists that spends her day providing extra assistance to students falling behind in reading. On top of planning small groups each day, for the past two years, she has put in significant hours at and out of school to become certified in Orton Gillingham, a multi-sensory phonics technique for remedial reading instruction. She builds positive relationships with her students and takes pride in their progress.

Melissa shows effective communication by being a member of the Building Leadership Team, LPDC, and LEA.  She is always willing to cover a class, pick up duty, or even as simple as walk a student to the nurse. Every student is greeted by Melissa with a smile and good morning in the drop-off line, even in the rain and snow. My favorite trait is the level of integrity she has for not only herself but every student and staff at London Elementary. She is very passionate and stands up for what is right. Melissa is a lifelong learner and educator I'm proud to have on my staff.

Students, parents, and fellow educators are encouraged to nominate outstanding London teachers, who significantly demonstrate the district’s Portrait of an Educator. Nominations can be made by filling out this nomination form.
