English Language Learners

English Language Learners (ELLs) are a unique group of learners. They come with different cultural backgrounds which may affect how they learn and perceive school in the United States. To help them succeed at London City Schools, we immerse them in the content right away. Research has shown that learning English through all the content areas, as opposed to English language only, helps ELLs learn English better.

To further their English ability, a fully trained Teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) teacher provides extra assistance. Elementary students are served through a pull-out intervention time. Middle school and high school students are served through tutoring time, which may be in an individual or group setting. Students also have accommodations in the classroom and for standardized testing.
