March 2018 Board of Education Regular Meeting Recap

The London City School District Board of Education began its March meeting by recognizing LHS student Madison Pollard, who recently was accepted to Project Search. Project Search is a one year, high school transition program, which provides training and education leading to employment for individuals with disabilities. Madison was accepted to the program at Dublin Methodist Hospital. Placement in Project Search is competitive. Applicants are selected by a committee and must be eligible for services with the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission in order to participate. School Counselor Maggie Gates and LHS teacher Amanda White helped to recognize Maddy.

During the school spotlight portion of the meeting, the Board heard updates from London Elementary School Reading Specialists Melissa Gaston and Lynette Wilson on the school’s recent Make It, Take It event.

In addition, the Board heard an update from Melissa Canney, the District Student Support Specialist, on current initiatives. You can view Mrs. Canney’s presentation here.

A few highlights of Board discussion included:

  • The Board reviewed an Enrollment Report and Five Year Projection submitted by the superintendent. The report indicates the district is growing modestly and is expected to continue growth, particularly at London Middle School and London High School over the next five years. You can access the report here.

  • A district team updated the Board on district’s efforts to improve STEM education. You can view a recap of the district’s STEM efforts here.

Highlights of Board action included:

  • Adopted a revised academic calendar for the 2017-2018 school year, which does not require calamity day 6 and day 7 to be rescheduled (To date, the district has cancelled classes six (6) days this school year). A plan is in place to modify the makeup day procedure for future school years.

  • Adopted District Academic Calendars for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. You can access a copy of the academic calendars on the district's homepage.

  • Approved revised course guides for both London Middle School and London High School, which both included additional STEM courses. The district has established a goal to receive a STEM designation by the Ohio Department of Education by the spring of 2019. Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, LCS is committed to updating curriculum and instructional resources to support STEM and problem-based learning across the district.

  • Approved a recommendation for an alternative day makeup plan for next school year. After five (5) calamity days, students will makeup days 6 - 8 by completing assignments posted to the district’s web portal. This plan will allow the district to make-up days using technology instead of adding 30 minutes onto each school day in future years.

  • Approved revisions to both the certified and classified staffs negotiated agreements.

At the end of the meeting, the Board entered into executive session to discuss the employment and appointment of personnel and specialized details of security arrangements.

Minutes of each meeting are approved the following month and then posted here.
