Preparing Students for Individual Success

London City Schools recognizes and values its students as people first, students second - ensuring that their basic, social, and emotional needs are fulfilled. LCS Student Support Specialist Melissa Canney has been working with school staff, parents and caregivers and community partners to ensure students have more resources to get what they need in order to truly focus on learning. These initiatives include:

  • Supplemental Nutrition - 160 students in grades PK-12 receive weekend meals each week to address food insecurity thanks to a partnership with local non-profit Sufficient Grace.
  • Clothing and Shoes - last school year a free store, The Raider Rack, opened where 137 students in grades PK-12 shopped for new clothing, shoes and coats.
  • Substance Abuse Prevention - a new organization for high school youth was formed, Teen Leaders of London (TLOL) and 15 students joined. TLOL youth pledge to remain substance free and commit to creating environmental and social changes for their peers to reduce alcohol, drug and tobacco use and to raise mental health awareness.
  • Suicide Prevention - students in grades 5-12 received suicide prevention training, screening and intervention (when necessary) with oversight and guidance from the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
  • Mentoring - At-risk students at London Elementary School gained the opportunity to develop positive and meaningful ongoing relationships with a trusted adult. Big Brother, Big Sister and a new partnership this year with local churches and Kids Hope USA will expand this offering.
  • Linking Families - Students and their families receive important and beneficial information and referral to local resources and services.
