Early Entrance to Kindergarten Criteria
A child may be considered for early entrance to kindergarten if all of the following conditions are present:
A. The child will be the proper age for entrance to kindergarten by the first day of January of the school year for which admission is requested. Should the child not be the proper age for entrance to kindergarten by the first day of January of the school year for which admission is requested he or she shall also be evaluated for early admittance if referred by an educator within the District, a pre-school educator who knows the child, or a pediatrician or psychologist who knows the child. Such children may also be evaluated at the discretion of the principal of the school to which the student may be admitted.
B. The child demonstrates academic readiness on a predetermined standardized assessment with a composite score of at least two (2) standard deviations above the mean + or – the standard error of measurement.
C. The child demonstrates cognitive ability on a predetermined standardized intelligence assessment with at least two (2) standard deviations above the mean + or – the standard error of measurement.
D. The child demonstrates kindergarten age-appropriate social/emotional skills on a predetermined standardized assessment.
Early Entrance to Kindergarten Procedures
A. An application for early entrance to kindergarten shall be submitted to the building principal by May 1st of the year prior to desired early entrance along with a valid birth certificate to verify date of birth.
B. The child will participate in the spring kindergarten screening. Upon completion of the kindergarten screening, the parents will be notified in writing, and given the option of scheduling an appointment with the building principal and the school psychologist to go over the results of the screening and to review any additional information. This meeting must be scheduled before June 15th. To ensure test security and validity, the actual test questions cannot be shared.
C. To be considered for further assessment, the child must have achieved two (2) standard deviations above the mean + or – the standard error of measurement (composite score) on the chosen kindergarten readiness assessment.
D. If qualified for further (standardized intelligence and social/emotional) assessment, the school psychologist will contact the parents to arrange a date and time to conduct the assessment. This assessment will occur over the summer at a mutually agreeable time. The parents may choose to have this assessment completed independently at their own expense.
E. The Acceleration Evaluation Committee shall meet to review the data from the evaluation by a school psychologist, information from other qualified personnel, and the parents. The Acceleration Evaluation Committee will determine if the child is eligible for early entrance. The child must score at least two (2) standard deviations above the norm + or – the standard error of measure on the chosen standardized intelligence assessment and demonstrate age appropriate social/emotional skills on the chosen social/emotional assessment. The decision of this committee may be appealed to the Superintendent within 30 calendar days after the parents receive the evaluation results and recommendation. The Acceleration Evaluation Committee ideally shall consist of:
- A school principal, assistant principal or other designated administrator of the school considered.
- A teacher at the grade level to which the student may be accelerated.
- A parent or legal guardian of the referred student or a representative by the parent or legal guardian of the referred student.
- The school psychologist
The Acceleration Evaluation Committee reserves the right to recommend early entrance to kindergarten for any student who has not met all of the above qualifications.
